Preparing for a Hog Hunt

Getting ready to hog hunt for the first time. Not sure what to expect, but I am looking forward to the possibility of some wild boar jalapeño sausage while helping out the hog problem in Texas.

I’ll be heading out to my first hog hunt here in about a month and I’m pretty excited about the prospect of some wild boar jalapeño sausage while helping out with the hog problem in Texas. There is a chance for some exotic deer to be harvested during this hunt, but the primary target is wild hog and I’m looking forward to it.

There are a few things that will be different from my previous hunts for deer. As such, I am starting the process of getting ready. Much of the equipment will me the same:

  • Cooler, ice, and drum liners
  • First aid kit
  • Knives for field dressing, skinning and quartering
  • Hunting clothes suitable for current Texas climate
  • Toiletries
  • Food and water
  • Bug spray
  • Binoculars

I’ve decided on a Daniel Defense DD5V1 as the primary hunting weapon and a Sig Sauer P220 for a back up side arm. Ammo selection is as follows:

I plan on heading out to the range a week or two before the hunt to confirm zero on the rifle, which should already be set. While I’m out at the range, I’ll also cycle a few magazines worth of the Underwood ammo to ensure it cycles properly through the side arm. After the range, I’ll give both weapons a good cleaning to make sure they are in tip-top shape for the adventure.

Other than that, I’m not sure what to expect, what else I should bring, or should prepare for. I suppose I could look into calls to improve odds of encountering hogs, but I know nothing about those.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome (and encouraged).
