Hunting Rifles

6.5mm Creedmoor Hunting Rifle Project

The 6.5mm Creedmoor cartridge has been around for some time now. It’s been the all the range among competitive precision rifle shooters (although it seems like 6mm based cartridges are the current rage) for some time now. At least long enough that the ammunition market in the USA has enough demand that manufacturers are creating quite a variety of hunting loads for this cartridge. In fact, I tend to see this cartridge regularly mentioned in magazine articles and the internet media.

In fact I’ve seen so much of it, that I’ve been toying with the idea of a rifle chambered for 6.5mm Creedmoor for some time now. Every time that I started down this rabbit hole, I started looking at a rifles that I could use to take a stab at a precisions rifle shooting match and also for hunting. Then I find that I am looking at heavier rifles for precision shooting with heavy stocks and barrels like the Daniel Defense Delta 5 or a Bergara USA Ridgeback which would not be fun to lug around on hunting trip – especially when I would likely outfit it with a larger long range scope. That train of thought would lead me to look at a lighter rifle like the Barrett Fieldcraft with a lighter hunting scope which maybe suboptimal for shooting it in a competitive setting. And the cycle would repeat itself.

What’s a guy supposed to do?

If I had it my way, then I would probably buy and outfit two rifles. Unfortunately for me, I just didn’t have that kind of cash laying around. However, a recent hunting experience pushed me over the edge to focus on a new hunting rifle. Why? Well, I don’t like shooting my .30-06 Springfield bolt action which I used to take my first deer earlier this year. While my AR-10 chambered in .308 Winchester works just fine for hunting deer from a blind, but I’d rather use a bolt action rifle. I guess the truth is I really don’t need another rifle, but it makes me feel a little better to have the excuses to help me rationalize another gun project.

Anyway, I did end up purchasing a new 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action rifle with the intent of using it for hunting. I decided on Fierce Firearms Fury LR chambered for 6.5 Creedmoor and I’m excited. It will be a fun project which I will post more about as the project progresses.

You maybe wondering why I choose a Fierce Firearms Fury LR rifle? Especially, since it wasn’t one of the rifles I had been eyeballing. Well, there are a few reasons for that. The first is that I wasn’t sold on the Barrett Fieldcraft as I the threaded model came with an 18-inch barrel and while I plan on outfitting the hunting rifle with a suppressor I felt like 18 inches was a little short for shooting it without one. While shopping and researching, I learned about Fierce Firearms and was quickly impressed by the heritage. The CEO and CFO are hunters who have been in the industry for a long time making quality precision rifles. When I emailed a question to Fierce Firearms, I got a response directly from the CEO almost instantly. Then there is the fact that the rifle met all my requirements (weight, chambering, barrel length, threaded barrel, light factory trigger, smooth action) and was within the same price range as the other rifles I was eyeballing. To top it off, Fierce Firearms guarantees 1/2 MOA (minute of angle) accuracy on their rifles.

I’m looking forward to accessorizing and outfitting this rifle in preparation for the upcoming 2019 deer hunting season. It’s going to be fun. Don’t worry, it won’t be long before I share pictures and videos.
